PSL FOR KAMUIS: A Surprise Party
[ Getting Yuri to allow himself to be acknowledged or celebrated in any way possible had always been a trial. No matter how much Flynn had insisted, and argued and yelled, Yuri had an infuriatingly good way of distracting Flynn from the main point and getting away without his much deserved accolades.
But even Yuri couldn't argue against a birthday party, designed specifically to bring everyone back together. That was what they all had decided.
When they were young, scrimmaging around the slums of the lower quarter, birthdays had always been small affairs. Little treats from their landlady, letting the birthday boy choose the game of the day without argument, sneaking their way into the citizen's quarter to admire some toys and shiny baubles that had been out of the reach of children like them.
But these days, things could be much bigger.
Yuri's landlady had graciously let Flynn and the others take command of the Comet and with Ted's help and Hanks, it wasn't difficult to get a number of the lower quarter citizens involved. Lady Estellise was easy to find, and was more than delighted to drag in the scattered members of Brave Vesperia as well as summon Rita from the depths of her research for one day to simply enjoy themselves in this new future, because Yuri had helped them all make them believe it could happen.
Yuri wouldn't be too pleased, he knew. But, Yuri could put up with the love everyone wanted to shower him for one night, Flynn thinks.
...still, Flynn isn't sure how he managed to get the role of distracting Yuri. He didn't doubt Patty's or Judy's abilities to cook a truly delicious dinner, but he had wanted to help out with the cake]

Still, he did accept any well wishes graciously from the community around him, it was nice just how close knit the lower quarter was even after all they had been through. He does pick up on some strange behavior around them and several seemed much more cheerier than before. Hmmm..
But he didn’t expect his Commandant friend to take out seemingly his whole day out just for this occasion or that they would be traveling to the beach together, an activity they sometimes did as children. He couldn’t help but even poke at it as they approached the sandy beach.]
So how much sweettalking did you do in order to arrange this for just someone like me? [Oh he had no idea.]
no subject
[Flynn says dryly. One could always count on Yuri to take a jab or two or three whenever he could, even when he was in a good mood.
Though admittedly, he had to do a lot of talking to get this set up]
His highness saw no problems with me taking a day off.
no subject
[He is grateful however to be with Flynn, even for just a day. With them leading two different walks of life, it wasn’t easy for them to get together like this anymore.
Anyway, he was kind of at a loss of what else to do. He’s not exactly the beach going type.]
So what do you want to do? Build some sandcastles? Hunt for shells to pawn off?
no subject
[Like Yuri could ever settle for doing things in a reasonable way. But because Yuri isn't wrong, Flynn can't deny he's glad for the little bit of freedom he's managed to get, just to spend time with his lifelong friend. It's all too rare he gets that these days.
Flynn laughs to himself at the mental image and begins to take off his coat. He had decided to wear his civvies today (despite what certain people thought, Flynn did know how to take a day off properly), something that still caused Karol and the others shock. Did he really look that different out of his armour?]
If you want to sit in the sand all day, be my guest. But I was thinking a race to that island over there would be more fun.
[It wasn't too far and it was almost too small to be even considered an island. More like a tiny piece of land that had built up over the years through sand piling up high. But it'd make a nice landing point]
no subject
He grins at the race suggestion. Ah of course, a competition. Why should have he expected any less?]
You’re on. [He stripped meanwhile down to his boxers. After all, why should he care when there was nobody around but the two of them.] But don’t go easy on me, you got it?
no subject
[Flynn grins back at Yuri, stripping down to his boxers too, but takes the moment to fold his clothes neatly as he strips out of them and leaves them in a nice tidy pile, well out of reach from the waves. He wades through the water, wincing at the chill that bites at his skin, but splashes through anyway, waiting for Yuri to follow]
no subject
Hmm, should we do this on the count of three?
no subject
[Flynn tenses, watching Yuri closely]
Three!
[And he's diving into the water, kicking off without waiting for a single beat.]
no subject
He’s focused only on that sandbar up ahead, not paying any attention to how well Flynn is doing. Although he had a hunch at what the outcome would be.
Its only a few minutes later that his hands and feet scrape against the sandy ocean floor as he hit land. Looking over to where Flynn was, he can see him already climbing out.]
Tch, beaten again. [He says in a playful tone, disappointed that Flynn won yet another competition between them. He had no one to blame but himself though, as Flynn was the one in better shape than he was (although he himself was no slouch). Yuri picks himself up off his feet, squeezing the water out from his long dark hair.]
no subject
[Flynn says warmly, pleased with his win but too good-natured to be too smug about it. Yuri always keeps him on his toes after all. He pushes his wet hair out of his eyes, watching Yuri, absentmindedly noting the way the rivulets of water slide down Yuri's skin]
no subject
[He had to admit, it was nice. The sandbar was too small for even monsters to live on and they had a good view of the capital from where they stood. Its still odd, seeing Zaphias his home city without the barrier blastia protecting it.] Man, remember when we used to go to the beach and got chewed out for leaving the barrier?
no subject
[Flynn chuckles and sits down next to Yuri, close enough that he thinks he can imagine Yuri's wamrth warming him back up, far enough to still keep their own spaces to themselves]
I never understood why they were so worried. The merfish always left us alone.
[Odd, since they never hesitated to attack them before the river incident]
no subject
[A shrug. Come to think of it, it probably wasn’t the brightest idea to come all the way over here without weapons. Oh well.]
Hey Flynn. [He turns over to look at his best friend with a mischievous look.] Have you found any ladies to settle down with?
no subject
The thought is quickly derailed by Yuri's odd question and Flynn splutters]
A-any ladies? Why are you asking me that all of a sudden?
no subject
Oh you know I sometimes overhear from girls pinning for you. I’d figure by now you’d find someone with how they’re lining up to get a piece of you.
[And he can’t say for certain he wouldn’t either. But a rogue like him? Pfft, he had no chance.]
no subject
I'm not sure what you mean. It's true there are women who tend to greet me more these days but that's just them being friendly.
[And Flynn knows he's not like Yuri - he doesn't offend people, so no one is wanting a 'piece' of him.]
no subject
You’d be surprised, there’s many of them who I overhear talk about how cute you are. Whatever, I guess none of the have the guts to approach you.
[He laid down against the sand, arms crossed behind him.]
You know Flynn? Sometimes I miss those days of traveling with Brave Vesperia. Wonder how they’re all holding up. [He hadn’t really seen them much, if at all since the day they parted ways, besides Estelle, Flynn, and sometimes Karol.]
no subject
[Like those women at the bar Captain Raven took him the last year. Flynn glances at Yuri and lays down too, enjoying the sun warming his skin]
They would probably like it themselves if you dropped in on them more often too.
no subject
[Modest as always. Yuri yawns, pulling himself off the ground and stares back at the shoreline they swam from.]
You wanna race back?
no subject
[Flynn laughs, even as he gets up and stretches. He's down for another race.]
no subject
You know I don’t. Plus everyone from the Lower Quarter might start wondering where we went off to.
no subject
[Well, this was probably all the time everyone needed for him to buy. They should head back. Flynn joins Yuri at the shore, laughing as they go diving in for their second race of the day]
no subject
1, 2, 3, lets go!
[He wastes no time blowing through those numbers, diving into the ocean and swimming at a good clip towards back home. Maybe now he’ll win the race?]
no subject
no subject
Wow! I can’t believe I actually beat you for once. Were you going easy on me?
